Having both spent many years in the developing world working on poverty issues, Phil Harvey and I found our interests turning to poverty in our own country. Despite the fact that the United States leads the developing world in so many ways, 15% of Americans still live in poverty. How could this be?, we wondered, and we decided to investigate. We turned to the programs in place to help the poor – or vast, trillion-dollar-a-year welfare entitlement system – to find answers. We were informed also by America’s founding documents. Our own Declaration of Independence tells us we are entitled to pursue happiness. …
Q: What attracted you to Free To Choose Network? A: I saw an advertisement for “Free To Choose Network” and immediately thought: “That has to be about Milton Friedman!” But good looks only go so far in a relationship. After I met with the entire team in Erie, I knew their culture of self-management and determination to grow the organization would draw me in like a magnet. Q: It’s always a daunting challenge to fill the shoes of a founder. What will your FTCN shoes look like? A: Probably J&M slip-ons, with a tassel… We need to be flexible to …
Starting in 1964 I led the creation of a public TV station in Erie, PA. From 1967 to 1983 I was general manager, then president/CEO of this PBS and NPR member. It was a dream job for someone with a BA and MA in Radio and Television. I was not politically focused or active but by 1974 I realized my “artistic” friends loved freedom to do as they wished, but were jealous and bitter when others used their freedom to start businesses and accumulate wealth. I thought they were hypocritical. I started having weekly breakfasts with an Erie business leader …

This three-hour documentary series on the life of former Secretary of State George Shultz presents viewers with a rare close-up look at this remarkable man who served his country at the highest level during an unforgettable time. Each of the three programs offers a never-before-seen look at the inner workings of the Reagan White House. It captures the intrigue and in-fighting as advisors vie for the ear of the president over historic issues such as Arms for Hostages and the Star Wars space defense initiative.
Through the memories of George Shultz, other cabinet members, journalists and historians, viewers relive the gripping tensions of these times; the fear of war in the Middle East, the shock of the barracks bombing that killed 220 Marines in Lebanon, the fall of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos and the presidency of Corazon Aquino and the delicate manipulations of summitry that helped determine the future of peace on the planet. For the first time these programs reveal Shultz’s dedicated efforts to protect his President and expose those in the White House who plotted the illegal Iran/Contra scheme. Throughout, George Shultz’s relentless determination combined with his use of national strength made him one of the most effective secretaries of state in the nation’s history. The series offers George Shultz’s remarkably vivid portraits of the major players on the national and world stage in the latter years of the twentieth century. But Shultz’s most remarkable and revealing portrait are of Ronald Reagan himself. This three-hour PBS series is full of high drama and living history.

When the U.S. assumed the PAX, it assumed responsibility for global order, but for how long? Just how deeply entangled should America be in the world’s affairs? What alternatives are there to being the world’s policemen? Is there really a downside to retreat? And in the absence of the U.S., how might global order be maintained – or decimated? In a companion documentary to America in Retreat by Wall Street Journal’s Pulitzer Prize winning columnist Bret Stephens, Free To Choose Executive Editor and Cato Senior Fellow Johan Norberg examines the questions facing a nation leaning back toward isolationism.

Last week we dipped our toes in the waters of school choice and school vouchers. Now, let’s put our hesitations aside and dive right in, because just like Mr. Dylan said, “The times they are a changin.” If all goes as planned, our new secretary of education will be implementing school choice in every state in America, not just her home state of Michigan. And still it’s not the idea of implementing school choice or school vouchers that seem to keep a dark cloud looming over the American people but more the idea of this system not being properly executed. School …
